UNIFIED INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
WHO IS CERTIFIED
Unified International Certification in Facial Plastic Surgery Diplomates
(UIC in FPS Diplomates)
The international certification process is aimed at setting similar standards of knowledge in the area of facial plastic surgery worldwide. The only established certification in the area of facial plastic surgery is that offered by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS). Specialists who have trained outside North America are not eligible for ABFPRS certification. Keeping this in mind, and with the support of the ABFPRS and the AAFPRS, a Unified International Certification Program in Facial Plastic Surgery was developed. Eligibility criteria were established following the standards of excellence established by the ABFPRS. Today, if international specialists fulfill the criteria, they may be eligible for the Unified International Certification Program sponsored by the International Federation of Facial Plastic Surgery Societies (IFFPSS) and the national facial plastic surgery society in their country or geographic area.
To achieve international certification the surgeon must:
Have completed an approved residency program in otolaryngology/head-and neck surgery or plastic surgery.
Have earned prior certification by the National Examining Body in Otolaryngology/Head-and Neck Surgery or Plastic Surgery.
Have been in practice a minimum of two years.
Have 100 consecutive operative reports (in the area of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery) performed in a two-year period, accepted by a peer-review committee.
Successfully pass a two-day written and oral examination in the specialty.
Hold the appropriate licensure and adhere to the IFFPSS Code of Ethics.

History of Plastic and Facial Plastic Surgery
Thursday, February 4th, 2010
Most Ancient Plastic Surgery involved nasal surgery in India, British surgeons travelled to India to learn the techniques and adapted these for cosmetic rhinoplasty in the 1800’s.
In World War one, a New Zealand otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon)working in London, Harold Gillies developed many of the techniques of modern facial plastic surgery in treating soldiers suffering from disfiguring facial injuries. His work was expanded upon during WWII by his cousin and former student Archibald McIndo, who modified earlier techniques to treat pilots severe lacerations and facial burns. For more detailed information click here: http://www.abfprs.org/about/h_father.cfm
So from its humble beginnings of a subspecialty of Ear, Nose and Throat. Plastic Surgical techniques were improved and applied to other parts of the body to eventually form its own specialty (Plastic Surgery). The art of facial plastic surgery was retained by the specialty of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery and is part of its core curriculum. Facial Plastic Surgery was retained by the specialty of Ear, Nose and Throat with surgeons performing cosmetic and reconstructive rhinoplasty and large reconstructions for tumours and skin cancers. for more detailed information please click here: http://www.abfprs.org/about/h_fps_organizes.cfm
In the USA in the 1970’s and 1980’s an Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon by the name of Jack Anderson sought out and refined facelifting techniques, teaching them to a new breed of Facial Plastic Surgeons who were only interested in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the head, neck and face. http://www.abfprs.org/about/h_education.cfm Much to the disdain of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) http://www.abfprs.org/about/h_ps_organizes.cfm , this led to some fairly public spats between Jack Anderson and the ASPS with one member writing a derogatory comment about him in an article. This led to a lawsuit which was eventually won by Jack Anderson when the judge declared that his training in facial plastic surgery was superior to that of ASPS and was personally awarded close to 2 million dollars in the 1980’s, a huge sum of money. This money was donated to create the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. http://www.abfprs.org/about/history20.cfm
Dr Pincock is proud to be part of this history, His fellowship director in the USA was Dr Wayne Larrabee a past president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and who himself was trained by the great Jack Anderson. http://www.sydneyfacialplastics.com.au/surgeon.html
